If you’re looking for a way to brighten up dark strands without changing up your entire hair color, caramel balayage hair is worth considering. While blonde balayage is one of the most common shades, other options can be better suited for dark hair like golden balayage or caramel balayage. Additionally, if you have dark hair, a medium to dark hair color will create a more natural look.

#13: Bright and Gorgeous Balayage

It is important to consult with a professional colorist to determine the best approach for achieving the desired Balayage effect on dark hair. Balayage is a French hair coloring technique where the color is painted on the hair by hand as opposed to the old school highlighting methods with foils and cap highlighting. According to our experts, your natural hair color and its tones (e.g. warm, neutral, or cool) will influence the results of your balayage.

#6: Color-Corrected Brown Balayage

Balayage has risen in popularity and become a preferred choice for individuals seeking hair color transformations. There are several key reasons why Balayage has captured the hearts of both clients and hairstylists alike. Subtle Light

Any balayage hair color will look good on dark hair, it always comes down to preference and the desired results. If you’re starting with a dark hair color, you’ll have to lighten your hair with bleach to achieve a balayage hair color. Keep in mind your hair color goals since the darker your starting color, the desired light balayage hair color might require multiple coloring sessions. Balayage has remained a popular hair coloring trend in recent years with a big thanks to social media.

As every element of the balayage experience is bespoke, your colorist will mix up a custom color in keeping with your conversation. Color melt is a coloring scheme, when a stylist places 3-4 shades along the hair shaft, and diffuses them together to get rid of the demarcation line. Subtle balayage is a soft balayage variation, the color is applied to the areas where it catches the light or where color would fade out naturally. In the 90’s balayage became trendy in the USA, but only now this technique reaches its maximum popularity. At some salons almost 90% of dye jobs are different types of balayage! The technique first appeared in Paris, and was called “Balayage à Coton”, as colorists used (and some still use) cotton stripes to isolate colored strands from the untouched ones.

Babylights are a fairly new movement great for a refined appearance. A slightly more mature version of balayage, babylights are a fantastic option for older women or ladies who want understated locks. Fluid hair painting is the process of application a lightener/color with the client’s head leaned back against a table. Partial balayage is when highlights are applied only to specific areas instead of throughout the whole head.

And then, go forth and live your best French girl life with your balayage hair color. Root smudging is a technique where the roots are slightly darkened or smudged to create a smooth transition between the natural hair color and the Balayage highlights. This trend adds depth and softness to the roots, resulting in a more natural and blended Balayage effect. Balayage for redheads can enhance the natural vibrancy and intensity of red hair. It can add depth and dimension, creating a multi-tonal effect that complements the base color.

However, those with lighter skin can choose a lighter shade for the best match. These are subtle, so if you're hoping for a more severe change, this might not be the proper hair dyeing method for you. The balayage hair color is typically seen on brunettes who want to lighten up their look, but blondes and redheads have joined in on the trend too. Perfect for summer, or really any time of the year, you'll feel lighter and even more radiant with these beautiful hairstyles. Take inspiration from famous beauties like Beyoncé, Gina Rodriguez, and more before heading to the salon to lighten up your hair color.

Then, she says balayage is achieved by the painting color on the top of your head and it getting more saturated towards the ends. Colombini explains that the color’s saturation is applied more liberally towards the ends for a lighter effect.

Unlike some coloring techniques that work best on specific hair colors, Balayage is highly adaptable and can be used on a wide range of hair shades. Whether someone has dark brown, blonde, or red hair, Balayage can be customized to create stunning effects that beautifully complement their natural color. This versatility has contributed to the widespread appeal and popularity of Balayage across different demographics. When deciding on the color scheme for your balayage, dark brown hair really affords lots of options.

Whether you use a curling iron or flat iron to achieve your waves, adding curls to your balayage hair will make the dimension of your hue pop. If you have heavy highlights and love that all-over blonde look, this is a great way to bring your natural roots down. Add in some dimensional lowlights and blonde tones to freshen things up.

By strategically placing lighter tones, Balayage adds dimension and texture to fine hair, making it appear fuller and more dynamic. Balayage for short hair offers the opportunity to add contrast and texture to  these styles. It can provide a pop of color, dimension, and visual interest to cropped cuts.

"There is no heat being retained inside of any foils forcing your hair to lift quicker, which can sometimes cause damage if over-processed," she explains. A balayage looks great when it’s enhanced with butterscotch hues. It has nice, subtle brightness pops that help pull all the warm-colored tones together.

Gibson says that it can have far more complications if not done properly. Before you call your colorist to get it done, there are a few things to take note of — and obviously hair inspo photos from some our favorite celebs. Scroll down to learn everything you ever needed to know about balayage.

Silver Gray Balayage Ombre Hair

Shadow root Balayage involves intentionally creating a darker root area that gradually transitions into lighter Balayage highlights. This trend adds depth, dimension, and a lived-in look to the hair, providing a low-maintenance and stylish option. Another factor contributing to Balayage’s popularity is its low-maintenance nature.

#21: Balayage on Very Dark Hair

Hale’s Balayage is a source of inspiration for those seeking a versatile and stylish look. Balayage for heart-shaped faces aims to create balance and soften the forehead. By adding highlights around the jawline and chin area, Balayage can help draw attention away from the forehead and enhance the face’s overall symmetry. Proper care and aftercare plays a significant role in keeping your Balayage looking fresh and vibrant.

#52: Blonde and Dark Brown Balayage on Natural Hair

A slightly messy straight-wavy style finishes the effortless vibe. The good thing about highlights is that no matter what hair type you have, from pin straight to curly, an optical illusion of movement is created. On textured messy hair particularly, golden blonde balayage gives off a carefree beauty vibe. If you want to break up very thick brown hair, illuminating streaks will create dimension and volume. Hints of amber and rose gold compliment brown and black hair, and provide a great transition shade if you’re looking to go lighter in the future.

#51: Angled Cut with Balayage and Dark Roots

The money piece trend involves adding bold and vibrant Balayage highlights to the front sections of the hair around the face. This technique creates a striking contrast and draws attention to the face, creating a high-impact and trendy look. Balayage for square faces can soften angular features and add dimension. By strategically placing highlights around the face and incorporating lighter tones, Balayage can create a more balanced and harmonious look. In some cases, corrective Balayage may be required to address any undesired results or to make adjustments to existing highlights. This involves color correction techniques to balance out tones, blend harsh lines, or correct any inconsistencies.

A colorist paints your balayage first and then applies foil around balayaged pieces. The lighter tones melt seamlessly into the highlighted background. American balayage is a mix of the open-air technique and foiling. A stylist applies foil highlights and then paints the remaining hair between the foils. It is great for dark-haired women, and is used for a perfect face framing, or extending highlights closer to the scalp.

Paint your hair with honey-brown balayage if you’re looking for the least damaging coloring technique. It’s low-maintenance and keeps the warm tones in the honey brown hue, too. A honey blonde balayage allows you to enjoy trendy, brighter tones. This hair color can be achieved with babylights, traditional highlights, and open-air balayage.

Rose gold balayage is the love child of the subtle highlighting technique and an up-and-coming sumptuous shade. Balayage uses a sweeping method to paint the hair without using foil. This natural approach allows the choice of fun colors, such as rose gold, which is a tempting consideration for brunettes, redheads and blondes likewise.

#62: Balayage Butterscotch Brown

Let’s go for a brown balayage styled with face-framing foils. To keep your hair looking fresh, I recommend adding face-framing and partial highlights during your full session. Scheduling appointments every weeks is adequate, with a full hair treatment done 1-2 times a year, based on what you want to achieve with your hair.

It’s ideal for hair with a thin density that requires more texture and dimension. The depth of the natural hair is guaranteed to enhance the shine of the added blonde hue. Opt for a dark brown base color that melts into a cool light brown.

hair color balayage

Take a look below to stay up-to-date with the latest Balayage trends. Today, Balayage continues to be a dominant trend in the hair industry, constantly evolving with new techniques, variations, and color combinations. Its rich history and widespread adoption have solidified Balayage as an integral part of the hair coloring landscape. Now that the coloring portion of your appointment is done, it’s time for styling—typically a trim and a blowout. Should you opt for a major cut on the same day as your color, that will be done pre-balayage, the better to paint highlights to suit your new style.

Foiling involves sectioning the hair and applying color or pre-lightener to each section, then wrapping it in foil to create a more precise and controlled result. Balayage, on the other hand, is a freehand technique where color is painted onto the hair without the use of foils. Balayage allows for more creativity and a more natural-looking outcome, while foiling provides a more uniform and controlled placement of color.

Possibly a prime example and true definition of balayage hair, two-tone wavy ‘dos suit everyone! Even with symmetrical and uniform highlights like these, make sure to keep face framing strands one or two shades lighter for brightness in your face. Brunette balayage can have as many varieties as you can imagine. If you prefer a natural look of sun-faded locks, caramel and blonde tones are a worthy choice. Those shades can breathe new life into your common choppy bob haircut. In general “highlights” are any strands of hair that are lighter than the base color, no matter how they are done.

Ask your hair colorist for a balayage for foilayage to give a soft blended blonde grow, and a root smudge or root melt will extend your grow-out time the best. An angled cut with balayage and dark roots is great if you want a low-maintenance look. The dark roots with light ends are a beautiful contrast on almost every skin complexion. Try a sweet caramel balayage if you love high-contrasting hair color.

Consider balayage on your long hair if you’re a woman with a long face. Balayage will help soften your hair color by adding natural sun-kissed strands. Avoid over-highlighting to keep your tresses low-maintenance to keep a more natural balance. Cut soft-moving layers to balance your face shape and prevent your hair from hanging.

Forget the old school method of foils and stripey highlights. With balayage, your hairstylist will freehand strokes for a more natural, sun-kissed result. So you can say that the sun's rays did all the work for you, because is looks that effortless.

Interview: Jocelyn Bioh on the Success of JAJA'S AFRICAN HAIR BRAIDING & Broadway Representation

african hair braiding shop

I think most of us that work in the theatre, onstage, behind the scenes, or around it in any sort of way, know what the typical Broadway theatre audience is, and Jaja’s African Hair Braiding did not have the typical Broadway audience. We were able to reach so many people I think because, like me, they also shared and had some sort of ownership of this story. They related to it in some way, whether they’ve been a customer at a hair braiding shop as many times as myself, or just once, or they knew people affiliated with one, or knew people like the characters in the play.

Our Services

Book your touch up once your style is complete, touch ups must be done within 4 weeks no later. Touch ups can only be done 1 time, you should book a new style once book opens. Bioh discusses how Jaja's African Hair Braiding impacted audiences, and much more. Ahead, everything you need to know about this technique, including what kind of hair to buy and how much it costs.

Feeding cornrows

We have so many organizations that do so much to uplift our community, and we saw a boom of them in 2020 when our country was really face on with a racial reckoning. Our mission is to celebrate black women in theatre, and any sort of events that we have, they’re all free, and all women can feel accepted and loved in this community. Dermatologists recommend spritzing your scalp every four to seven days when your hair is in a protective style.

This style can last six to eight weeks, which is customary for braids. “The great thing about this technique is that once the middle starts getting old, you can take the middle [sew-in] out and just braid the rest, and you get a two-in-one style,” says Kamara. If you find that your braids are looking frizzy sooner than the sew-in pieces are, you can redo the braids around the perimeter to refresh the look without getting a whole new style. It’s important to cleanse whichever section you remove before reinstalling to avoid buildup and make sure your scalp stays clean and healthy. Kids Style

It was not the typical Broadway audiences, it was people who had heard about the show, and wanted to come. And there was not one night that I sat in the audience that I wasn’t completely moved by how many people this play had reached. We would have extended again, we could have extended all the way to the new year with the way ticket sales were going, but because of how MTC has their season structured we just couldn’t. Today we’re in a day and age in which we see so many Broadway shows struggling to stay open, that was not the case with us. We really hit a magical mark in terms of audience, and cultivating an audience that wanted to come see the show.

The comedy chronicles a single day in a Harlem braid spot, populated by the stylists (many of whom are African immigrants) and their assorted clientele. The production marked Bioh’s Broadway debut, though she has been an acclaimed and decorated playwright since the premiere of her “School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play” in 2017. We offer a wide range of services to meet your hair care needs. Tribal braids originated from the Fulani tribe in West Africa and were a way to celebrate the culture. The look traditionally consisted of middle-parted cornrow braids that go straight back against the head, decorated with beads. Like many styles, this look evolved and changed over the years. We offer a wide variety of services, focusing on personal aesthetics. We also offer bridal and special occasion styling to make sure you look your best on your big day.

The good news is that you can reuse the weft bundles up to four times with proper maintenance (washing, conditioning, and brushing the extensions as needed). The look is so convincing that some commenters under Kamara’s video labeled this technique, which works best with boho braids, the fakeout. I’ve been a hair stylist for many years, I love to create beautiful hair styles.

And I grew up going to hair braiding shops, I’ve probably been getting my hair braided since I was four or five years old. And that’s a universal thing, I think, for a lot of people, going to the hair salon, or maybe there’s a tradition of getting their nails done with their sister, or their mom. A hair braiding salon is truly like a second home to me. So, I’ve always known how ripe it was with story and characters, the people coming in and out, the people who work there. They’re rich, vibrant places, and being able to write a story about it felt like a really exciting one.

I had so many of these artists who I really looked up to, Charlayne Woodard, and Sarah Jones, and Anna Deavere Smith, even Whoopi Goldberg, her show from the 80s, I just loved these shows, and I really thought that was what I was going to do. We are thrilled to be in our fourth year operational, third year doing the awards celebration, and we hope that people will continue to donate to us so we can keep having all of these events and mentorship programs. It just goes to show that we really need voices like yours, and more diversity, more representation, because people will come. It’s important, and it must feel incredible to know that you are a part of that.

This will activate the curls for a vacation-ready look. Brooklyn-based braider Shanna St. Cyr always finishes off her boho braids with the Lotta Body Coconut Oil and Shea Foaming Curl Mousse, which adds a soft hold and a beautiful sheen to the hair, plus it smells like a tropical vacation. At Haja's Hair Braiding Salon, we've been helping our clients look and feel their best for over 10 years. Our founder, Haja, started the salon with a vision of creating a space where clients could come to relax and receive top-quality hair care.

Stitch braids are a type of protective style that is made using the feed-in technique that is, you continue to add more extension to your natural hair as you braid. To make stitch braids, you have to section the natural hair into thick or thin horizontal lines and then braid the natural hair with the hair extension. I wish I had one of those practices that other writers I admire have, where maybe they wake up at 8am, and they make a tea, and they write their inspirations down, they watch the sunrise or something like that. I kind of throw together a bowl of cereal, I sit down, and I’m like, ‘Let’s see what comes out today,’ and if that’s one page or 50, that’s what it is until the next time I sit down to write. I think only in the case of me having a hard deadline to follow is when I’m the most disciplined [laughs]. Once the braids and sew-in are complete, it’s important to zhuzh the hair with an allover mist of water or leave-in conditioner (or a mixture of both).

The attention to detail and the precision in their work left me feeling like a queen. I will definitely be returning to Afi Hair Salon for all my future hair needs. I’ve been on Broadway before as an actor in a show that was very successful, and it moved people in a way that was surprising to some. People walked in expecting the story to be one way and walked out having experienced something else. And I was glad that Jaja’s was a small part of someone else’s Broadway excitement.

Knotless braids are single extension braids where the client's hair is braided first and [extension hair] is added to the braid,” Foster says. “It gives the appearance of a natural braid coming out of the scalp.” She notes that they generally lay flat to the scalp and aren't big and bulky. I’m also an actor, and it was when I was in my senior year of college that I started writing. I think I’m going to study playwriting,” I got into Columbia, and I knew I wanted to come back home to New York. The things I’m passionate about writing are very specific in terms of my plays, and even my own films or pilots of television shows.

Everyone wants to come and enjoy and have a good time, and be in fellowship and community with their community.

Their passion for preserving and sharing these traditions shines through in their work. Afi Hair Salon is the perfect place to explore the beauty of African hair traditions while receiving top-notch service. We have our flagship event, which is our Black Women on Broadway Awards celebration that happens every June, usually the week before the Tony Awards. Cornrows are a traditional style of braids in which the hair is braided very close to the scalp, using an underhand, upward motion to make a continuous, raised row. Cornrows are often done in simple, straight lines, as the term implies, but they can also be styled in elaborate geometric or curvilinear designs. With a team of highly skilled and experienced stylists, we take pride in creating stunning African braids that showcase your unique style and personality. Our goal is to make you feel confident and beautiful with every visit. At Afi Hair Salon, our stylists are experts in mastering hair braiding techniques from both ancient and modern African hair traditions.

Be mindful that the two types of human hair should match in texture, color, and length. If you really can’t find hair that matches, Kamara says this would be the time to make an exception and get all weft hair. (Remember, this isn’t ideal, but IT’S better than getting hair bundles that don’t match.) If you opt for getting only weft bundles, your stylist will cut the weft off to use for the loose strands in the box braids, and this may cause some shedding. Mostly I think I was thrilled by the audience that was coming.

Obviously, I write comedic plays, so the marriage of both, that’s what Jaja’s was born out of, the marriage of these things that I wanted to express. It’s really a love letter to all those African hair braiding ladies. The fakeout technique cuts down—to half—the time it takes to complete the service, says Kamara. Mid-back-length boho braids will take about three to four hours versus the usual six to eight. As a bonus, covering the middle of the head with bundles in the same texture as the loose hair creates a fuller look.

So, being able to explore and push and challenge myself is exciting. Being able to express my artistry as a writer in multiple mediums is really a privilege, because I know that’s not an opportunity that everybody gets, and I’ve been very, very fortunate. I love being able to collaborate with other artists, especially in a writer’s room when you’re working on a television show, to get to create something that is very different from what I normally write about.

Today, that vision lives on through our dedicated team of stylists. For those who desire instant length, versatility, or protective styling options, we offer hair extensions and wigs. Our braiders can expertly install extensions or customize and style wigs to achieve your desired look. I recently had the pleasure of visiting Afi Hair Salon for corn rows, and I was amazed by the quality of service I received. The stylist not only created beautiful, intricate corn rows but also educated me about the history and significance of this hairstyle in African culture.

How to Make Your Hair Grow Faster: 19 Easy, Expert Tips

how to get my hair to grow faster

Hair grows because matrix cells shed some of their structure as they reach the upper follicle. The shed structure combines with keratins to form hair strands that exit your skin’s surface. As you age, some follicles stop producing hair, which is what causes baldness or hair thinning. "High heat causes damage to the hair and the hair cuticle; however, realistically, it is not always practical to completely cut out heat styling," Ahram explains.

Deciding how often you should wash your hair ultimately depends on your individual hair type. But whether you have curls or straight hair, Yates does not recommend shampooing on a daily basis. “The daily use of cleansers can cause dryness and scalp irritation,” she says. "Since heat protectors do not block heat completely, try to keep hair styling tools at the lowest possible setting and try to avoid holding the heat in one spot for too long to minimize damage." Once you've finished conditioning and rinsing, make sure to gently dry your hair. "You should never rub aggressively with a towel, as that can cause breakage and tangles," Hurtado says.

For the best results, consider a personalized hair care routine using high-quality products, ideally curated for you by a hair professional during a proper hair consultation. To protect your hair, “it’s essential to avoid products containing sulfates, parabens, phthalates, and silicones that can dehydrate, weigh down your hair, and irritate the scalp,” adds Sobel. While several hair growth factors are out of our control, eating a nutrient-rich diet, stress management, and gentle hair care practices may help you grow your hair. Understanding the natural hair growth cycle and implementing strategies like scalp massages and peppermint oil may also help stimulate hair follicles, promoting a healthier and quicker growth process. Not only will scalp massages feel good, but they'll also stimulate blood flow and help to remove dead skin cells—both of which will encourage healthy hair growth.

Eat a Nutrient-Rich Diet

Castor oil is the unsung hero of the hair world—you might even be tempted to ditch your coconut oil for it after reading this. First of all, castor oil has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties to help combat scalp infections that prevent your hair from growing. Second, it’s filled with omega-6 fatty acids, vitamin E, proteins, and other nutrients that can penetrate your parched strands and seal your hair shaft to retain moisture. Third, it makes for an amazing hot oil treatment—massaging the oil into your roots will help your scalp drink up all of the nutrients and help promote hair growth. However, with the proper products and techniques, this concern can be addressed.

Scalp health is important for growth, but so is keeping the rest of your hair nourished, even if it’s made up of dead cells. Cut down on split ends and damage by doing a once-weekly deep-conditioning treatment. “Have a deep-conditioning treatment that’s part of your regular regimen,” says hairstylist Gina Rivera, owner of Phenix Salon Suites.

There are limits on how much hair will grow in a week, but giving your hair a little extra love will maximize hair growth in a short period. You can also find hair growth serums that contain active ingredients that have been FDA-approved to promote hair growth, like minoxidil. "Use a pretreatment or oil on the scalp before shampooing and massage the product using a scalp massager to stimulate blood circulation, promoting hair growth and healthy hair," she says. When applied to the scalp, minoxidil is believed to widen blood vessels, promoting increased blood flow to hair follicles.

Keep reading to learn 14 ways you can help your hair grow and prevent breakage. If you’re experiencing unexplained and/or severe hair loss, you should schedule a checkup with your doctor, as certain health conditions can cause hair loss. In such cases, treating the underlying cause may help reverse hair loss issues. Generally, it’s best to get protein from your diet instead of relying on supplements.

However, a scalp massage may help dilate blood vessels beneath the skin. This could lead to thicker, stronger hair that’s less likely to break off or become damaged. While peace of mind and exercise can reduce stress and make you feel better than before, practicing yoga is believed to stimulate hair growth. This idea comes from the notion that in inverted positions, a rush of fresh blood goes to the head and pumps new life into the scalp. In one review, researchers found that these three oils can improve scalp health.

Effective strategies for promoting faster hair growth include scalp massage, proper hair care, hydration, balanced nutrition, and supplementation with essential vitamins and minerals. Managing stress levels and adopting a healthy lifestyle can also support optimal hair growth. At my most recent hair appointment, my hair colorist was shocked at how much my hair has grown since September. Although annoying AF for my highlights, my hair has been seemingly growing at the speed of light lately. Various supplements are available that include key nutrients for promoting hair health.

Kerry Yates, scalp health expert and founder of beauty consultancy Colour Collective, always recommends a select group of anti-inflammatory botanicals. “Aloe vera instantly soothes and conditions without negatively impacting sebum production,” she says. “Fenugreek is rich in niacin, which can increase blood flow to the follicle. Keeping your scalp clean promotes healthier hair growth by creating an optimal environment for hair follicles.

Bleach and other chemical hair treatments like permanents weaken your hair, so it's more likely to break before it grows to your longed-for length. If you choose a hue not too far from your natural color -- say, three shades -- you’ll need less damaging peroxide. Always spot-test store-bought dye before applying it to your whole head. The remaining strands are in either a resting state or preparing to die and fall out.

Split ends can travel up your hair shafts and make your locks even shorter. Your hair grows about 1/2 inch a month, so you might aim for a 1/4-inch trim every 3 months or so. Chloe Metzger was deputy beauty director at Cosmopolitan with 10 years of experience writing about hair, makeup, nails, and skincare, with stories like the curly girl method and curly hair products. She’s tested hundreds of hair-growth treatments over her career that helped her write this story. First, it’s important to note here that hair-growth supplements are not a miracle cure for growing hair faster (and usually won’t even work unless you’re actually deficient in vitamins).

Eat the right diet.

Shamban recommends any scalp scrub formulas with salicylic acid (which strips away the outer layer of cells and sebum buildup) and glycolic acid (which penetrates even more deeply). You can also try making your own using sugar, olive oil, honey, and apple cider vinegar. Or simply incorporate a once-weekly shampoo that’s equal parts clarifying and hydrating. Shamban prefers the Philip B. Peppermint Avocado Shampoo, which gets rid of buildup without stripping your scalp of its natural oils. If you are dealing with increased hair loss as a result of factors like severe stress, illness, or the changes that occur after you’ve had a baby, your hair growth will accelerate naturally once the situation resolves. If you’ve tried everything else on this list without success, PRP (platelet-rich plasma) might be your solution. “This increasingly popular treatment works wonders in improving the function of hair follicles by utilizing high-volume platelets derived from the patient’s own blood,” says Dr. Sobel. As he describes, this “liquid gold” solution stimulates cell regeneration and triggers and maintains the hair’s growth phase. An additional advantage of PRP is that it comes from the individual’s blood, ensuring there are no adverse or allergic reactions to worry about.

After all, “harsh brushing can cause breakage, so especially if you have curly, fragile, damaged, or fine hair, be mindful when brushing and styling,” says celebrity hairstylist Marley Xavier. When brushing, Xavier recommends switching to a gentle brush like the Manta detangling brush. “Unlike traditional treatments that work superficially, molecular repair treatments (like L’Oréal Professionnel's Absolut Repair Molecular) address the inner structure of the hair. The peptide bonder rebuilds bonds, and 5 amino acids repair hair structure at a molecular level. This means that hair is up to 82 percent stronger, and the hair’s original elasticity and movement are restored.

Choose hair-care products with targeted ingredients.

Wearing your hair pulled back tightly in a bun, ponytail, or tight braids (like cornrows) can damage hair and contribute to hair loss. The same is true of wearing hair rollers to bed, or wearing hair extensions for long periods of time. Experts recommend changing up your hairstyle frequently if you like to adopt these practices and give your hair more time to be loose and relaxed.

Consider Hair Growth Supplements

However, there are things we can avoid that may cause impaired growth and increased shedding. Rumor has it that over-shampooing can lead to broken, dry, and brittle locks, due to the cleanser stripping the hair of its natural oils. Depending on your hair type, the number of times you should shampoo your hair per week varies. Thicker, coarser hair types can get away without washing their hair for a few days, while thinner hair types may find their hair feels greasy even after one day. In such cases, dry shampoo can work wonders in soaking up excess grease as you await longer strands.

Or gently press, stretch, and pinch your own scalp for several minutes each day. If you brush it when it’s dripping, you could break strands or damage the cuticle, the shingle-like cells that protect each hair. Using heat tools on very wet hair can create bubbles in the hair shaft, making it extra fragile. If your hair's straight, let it air-dry, then comb gently with a wide-tooth comb.

In the grand scheme of things, 12 centimeters (or 4.7 inches) of hair growth a year is a decent amount, but for those of us whose patience tends to run extremely thin, a centimeter a month sounds like a very slow burn. Fine, coarse, curly, colored — different hair types have different needs. If your hair is dry, for instance, wash it less frequently and use a heavier conditioner. Avoid brushing while it’s wet and use products designed for your hair type.

Avoid dehydration to keep your hair less brittle and more resilient against breakage. Apply fresh lemon juice to your scalp and hair 15 minutes before you shampoo. You can also use lemon essential oil diluted in a carrier oil as part of a hair mask. Speak with a healthcare professional before introducing supplements to your diet and follow the manufacturer’s recommended dosage.

“We don’t know the exact mechanism for how it works, but we think a lot of it has to do with increasing blood flow to the scalp,” Dr. Bhanusali has previously told Cosmo. “It’s like giving more water to the plant to help it grow.” If you do decide to try minoxidil-based products, you need to be consistent and commit to using it daily. "I always keep two to three in my shower and rotate as our hair can get used to one thing and you won't get the same great results you once did." As for washing, that depends on your specific hair type! Anabel Kingsley tells us, "If you have fine hair, shampoo daily to every other day... For those with coiled curls or coarse hair, try not to leave more than three or four days between shampoos."
